The Rewriting of Female Myths in Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, by Gloria Anzaldúa

In this work we discuss the theme of the rewriting of female myths in Borderlands/La frontera: The new mestiza, a book published in 1987 by Gloria Anzaldúa. Based on her position as a woman, Chicana, lesbian and queer, the writer proposes a journey towards a new mestizo consciousness, which begins at a physical point: the geographic boundary imposed between the United States and Mexico. Through a dive into the human psyche, pre-Columbian female myths are invoked, belonging to the Mexican and Chicano imaginary, which are re-signified in the work. The female myths in Borderlands, in this sense, question the subjects of traditional representations and propose another way to retell the various names of Women that have been forgotten by traditional systems of representation.
