Abstract

In this paper, I show ways of identifying metaphors in corpora. Corpora are becoming easier to obtain, and they provide a wealth of detail that was never before seen. However, corpora also pose new challenges to metaphor researchers, since normally the amount of data in a corpus far exceeds the human capacity to pinpoint all the occurrences of possible metaphors. I suggest procedures for corpus analysis with a view to metaphor identification, focusing particularly on a metaphor identifier,
an online tool especially dedicated to spotting possible metaphors in corpora. The use of this identifier is illustrated with an analysis of president
Lula’s metaphors, in a corpus of all his official speeches since his inauguration, totaling over 2 million words.
