Information mediation in the Museum of Image and Sound of the State of Pará, Brazil: an analysis of the captions of the exhibition ‘Eneida Simplesmente’

Abstract

Objective: To analyze information mediation through labels in the "Simply Eneida" exhibition at the Museum of Image and Sound of Pará State (MIS-PA), investigating how these textual elements operate in museological communication and in the construction of expographic narratives.

Methods: Qualitative research with descriptive and exploratory approach, using narrative analysis and in loco observation. Field research was conducted with three visits to MIS-PA in July/2024, analyzing three distinct types of labels according to guidelines from the National Inventory of Musealized Cultural Assets (INBCM), Object ID, and Camargo-Moro's (1986) recommendations.

Results: Significant variation was identified in the approach and completeness of information in the analyzed labels, reflecting different historical moments of the museum and its documentary practices. The most recent label showed alignment with contemporary museological documentation guidelines, while older labels demonstrated informational limitations. The analysis revealed opportunities for standardization and improvement in the development of these exhibition elements.

Conclusions: The study contributes to understanding labels as fundamental instruments of information mediation in museological environments, highlighting the need for a more systematic approach in their elaboration. The results demonstrate the importance of standardizing documentary practices to enhance visitor experience and museological communication effectiveness.

João Vitor Corrêa Diniz, Federal University of Para

PhD student in the Postgraduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI) at the Federal University of Pará, research line Organization and Representation of Knowledge. Bachelor in Museology (2018). Bachelor's and teaching degree in Social Sciences from the University of the Amazon (2013). Master's degree from the Postgraduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI) UFPA. From 2019 to 2021, he was a substitute professor of museological theory and practice for the Bachelor's Degree in Museology at the Federal University of Pará. Between 2022 and 2023, he worked with the Integrated System of Museums and Memorials of the State Secretariat of Culture of Pará (SIMM/SECULT) as coordinator of the Documentation and Research Division, having participated in the restoration and requalification projects of the Palacete Faciola Cultural Center (2022), and the Soledade Cemetery Park (2023), having participated in the organization of exhibitions during this period with the team of the aforementioned System. He acted as technical manager, in the museological documentation axis, at the first Amazon Biennial (2023), hired by the company Parawara Consultoria Museologia e Patrimonial LTDA. Final papers, academic and professional experiences with emphasis on Anthropology, Tapajônica Archaeology, Sociology, Museological Documentation, Audience Research, Thematic Treatment of Information and Knowledge Organization.

João Arlindo dos Santos Neto, Federal University of Para

Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of Pará, assigned to the Institute of Applied Social Sciences, working at the School of Library Science (FABIB). He is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Postgraduate Program in Information Science of the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT)/School of Communication of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Eco-UFRJ), with a scholarship from the National Program for Academic Cooperation in the Amazon (PROCAD/Amazônia/CAPES). He is the Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Information Science (PPGCI/UFPA), management 2023-present. He is the Deputy Coordinator of the Working Group (GT3) Mediation, Circulation and Appropriation of Information of the National Association for Research and Postgraduate Studies in Information Science (ANCIB), management 2024-present. Professor I (UAB CAPES), in the Distance Learning Course in Library Science at UFPA. Associate Professor in the Postgraduate Program in Information Science at the State University of Londrina (PPGCI/UEL). PhD and Master in Information Science from the São Paulo State University 'Júlio de Mesquita Filho' (PPGCI/UNESP) and Bachelor in Library Science from UEL. He is the Leader of the Information, Society and Citizenship Research Group at UFPA and of the Interfaces: Information and Knowledge Research Group at UEL. He is a member of the Information: Mediation, Culture, Reading and Society Research Groups at UNESP/Marília, and of the Competence and Mediation in Information Environments Group at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC). He is responsible for the column entitled Classroom: day to day at the university, published in INFOhome. His research interests include the following topics: Information mediation; Information mediation - Metric studies; Information professional training; Information resources and services; Use of media and social networks by information equipment. Gilberto Gomes Cândido, Federal University of Para

He holds a degree in Archival Science from the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP (2010), a Master's degree in Information Science from the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP (2014), and a PhD in Information Science from the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP (2020). He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Archival Science and the Postgraduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). Researcher linked to the lines of research: Organization and Representation of Knowledge and Information in the Amazon (ORCI AMAZÔNIA - UFPA/ Belém/PA); and Language, discourse and organization of knowledge (UNESP - Marília/SP); Training and professional performance in information production and organization (GP-FAPOI - Marília/SP). He has experience in the area of ​​Information Science, with emphasis on Organization and Representation of Knowledge and Information, working mainly on the following topics: Aspects and Perspectives of Linguistics in the Organization and Representation of Knowledge and Information, Epistemology of Archival Science and Information Science, Document Management, Anthropology in the Cultural, Linguistic and Social dimensions of archival documents, Environmental and Sustainable Information.
