Abstract

Objective: This article explores the concept of the school library in Spain in the 21st century, analyzing its evolution, services, and management models.

Method: To achieve these objectives, a comprehensive review of documentary and bibliographic sources on the evolution and management of school libraries in Spain was conducted.

Results: Two main types of school libraries are highlighted: the school library, which serves the entire educational community, and the classroom library, which focuses on addressing the specific needs of a class. The role of the library as a learning resource center is emphasized, which not only encourages reading but also promotes information literacy, curriculum development, and the integration of technology. Management challenges and strategies to improve its impact on the educational community are also addressed.

Conclusions: Currently, the school library still needs to evolve toward more innovative and accessible models, consolidating its position as a reference center in the field of education.

Author Biographies

Isabel Puente Cadena, University of Zaragoza

She is currently an associate professor in the Library and Information Science Department of the Department of Information Sciences and History of Science, where she teaches in the Information and Documentation program. She holds a Diploma in Library and Information Science, a Bachelor's Degree in Information and Documentation, and a Master's Degree in Information and Digital Communication Consulting. She holds a PhD in Information and Communication. All of her studies were from the University of Zaragoza. She has published several works related to school libraries and reading habits in Spain.

Carmen Agustín-Lacruz, University of Zaragoza

Professor in the Department of Documentation Sciences and History of Science at the University of Zaragoza since 1995, where she teaches in the Bachelor's Degree in Information and Documentation, Journalism, and in the Master's in Consulting in Information and Digital Communication. She is the coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Information and Communication. She holds a PhD in Information Systems, a degree in Hispanic Philology, and a Diploma in Library and Information Science. She worked as a librarian in the network of municipal public libraries in Zaragoza. She has published more than 100 works on image analysis, library services, public reading, and information organization. She has taught and coordinated various courses on image content analysis, multimedia documents, advertising, documentary reading, public libraries, school libraries, reading animation and dynamization, information literacy, and more. She has completed several research stays at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​the State University of São Paulo in Marilia (São Paulo, Brazil); Federal of Sao Carlos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) Federal of Santa Catarina (Santa Catarina, Brazil); Evora and Porto.
