Objective: To reflect on the limitations of the classical concept of domain in encompassing emerging communities, such as Critical Archival Studies, and to propose a revision of Domain Analysis (DA) to include domains in formation.
Methods: This is an exploratory and descriptive study, based on a theoretical review of the literature. Relevant works on Critical Archival Studies and DA were prioritized, with a focus on Information Science and Knowledge Organization. The review included pioneering authors and regional contributions, analyzed in three sections: 1) characteristics of Critical Archival Studies, 2) concepts of DA and domains, and (3 the application of DA to Critical Archival Studies.
Results: The analysis showed that Critical Archival Studies do not fit into the classical concepts of domain due to conceptual heterogeneity, absence of organizational structures, and lack of theoretical consensus. It was identified that the notion of “emerging domain,” offers greater flexibility by characterizing communities in formation through three elements: conceptual heterogeneity, lack of consolidated structures, and development potential.
Conclusions: It is concluded that the notion of emerging domain expands DA’s ability to analyze communities in formation, allowing the recognition of both their diversity and their potential for consolidation. DA, in this sense, should assume an active role in the characterization and strengthening of emerging domains. This study contributes to the theoretical and methodological advancement of DA and paves the way for future research on emerging communities in Information Science.
