Objective: We describe the representation of documents with ontology according to the principles and concepts of Archival Science. The ontological analysis considered the organization document production aiming that the organization developed ontologies could be compatible with archival principles and solutions, when the issue is the document and its production.
Methods: Exploratory study of a qualitative nature. An ontological analysis of concepts to allow the classification of archival entities into the classes specified in BFO top-level ontology, with regard to: information, archival document and materiality; production of archival document; and juridical-administrative, administrative, documentary, and provenancial contexts.
Results: The ontological model clarifies and specifies the semantic meaning of the analyzed archival concepts, building a support for logical derivations of these documents, association of these documents with entities that represent domain contents specified in other ontologies derived from BFO.
Conclusions: The results demonstrate that archival concepts are aligned to BFO in a subsumption relationship with respect to the analyzed aspects. It is observed that the archival document is based on BFO's perceptions of reality.
