Abstract

In navigation it is very common the measurement of distances in nautical miles and speeds in knots. One nautical mile equals 1852 m, not a very practical number, so the mile is an apparently “odd” unit. We actually use the kilometer on a daily base, right? So we can ask why on earth is that unit so interesting, or convenient to be used in navigation or aeronautics. That's what we will see.
