Focus and Scope
Estudos em Jornalismo e Mídia is a scientific journal edited by the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Jornalismo at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC).
Its main objective is to disseminate works that present contributions to the advancement of research and reflection on journalism and its relationships with society, the market, and academia.
Issues related to information, media communication processes, and technological, cultural, and social innovation are part of its scope.
The journal seeks to disseminate and strengthen original, unpublished, consistent, and effectively innovative knowledge in the field of Communication.
Estudos em Jornalismo e Mídia is a peer-reviewed journal, registered under ISSN 1984-6924, published exclusively online, with open and free access to the full text, in order to allow the rapid and broad dissemination of the knowledge produced.
It is classified as A2 in Qualis Periódicos (2021–2024) in the field of Communication and Information.
History
The journal Estudos em Jornalismo e Mídia was created in 2004 within the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Jornalismo at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. It circulated in print format until 2008, with its contents also available in PDF format on the Journalism Master's Program website.
From 2008 onward, it became an electronic journal with free distribution and full open access, using the Open Journal System (OJS) for editorial management and officially hosted on the Portal de Periódicos UFSC.
In 2010, EJM adopted a new graphic design project for its articles, seeking to modernize its visual identity and facilitate reading. In the same year, it implemented the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for published articles, becoming the first scientific journal in the field of Communication in Brazil to adopt this practice.
In 2014, marking its tenth anniversary of publication, EJM expanded its editorial board, improved its evaluation system, launched a new graphic design project, and prepared a larger issue with the publication of more articles.
In 2015, the journal was already indexed in EBSCO, Latindex, and the Portal de Periódicos Capes. In the following years, it was also indexed in Diadorim, Miguilim, OpenAire, and OpenAlex.
Regarding periodicity, until 2024 it was published in semiannual issues. From 2025 onward, it adopted continuous publication.
From 2026 onward, EJM implemented accessible templates for people with blindness and low vision. It also reviewed and updated its editorial policies, improved its website, and began publishing under a Creative Commons CC-BY license.
