Abstract

What does it mean to implement community communication as part of the training of Journalism undergraduates and as a civic practice? This article aims to answer this question based on the experiences developed in the Community Journalism course of the Journalism program at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in 2022. To this end, it relies on documents produced in the course, teaching experiences, and the accounts of students and learners throughout the process. The work with vulnerable communities was made possible through partnerships with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) that offer socio-educational programs during extracurricular hours in Florianópolis (SC). The discussion presented is grounded in Paulo Freire’s Dialogic Praxis (1996), understanding communication as a social, value-based, and symbolic dimension—a process of knowledge exchange. The lessons learned can contribute to the implementation of similar projects and initiatives in other spaces and contexts.

Melina de la Barrera Ayres, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina

Teacher in the Journalism Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Interdisciplinary PhD in Human Sciences (UFSC), Master in Journalism (UFSC), Bachelor in Social Communication - Specialization in Journalism (Universidad Católica del Uruguay). Coordinator of the Journalism and Community Action Extension Project. Member of the ComFreire and DHJor Research Groups of the Journalism Department of UFSC.

Magali Moser, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina

Journalist with a master's and doctorate in Journalism in the research line Journalism, Culture and Society from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). She was a substitute professor in the Journalism Department of UFSC and in the Communication Department of the Regional University of Blumenau (FURB). She works as a researcher at the National Institute of Digital Democracy (INCT.DD) at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA).
