Cross-cultural analysis of the impact of Twitter in sports

Social networks has been used intensively in sports environment. Thus, the research aims to analyze the impact of the use of Twitter in high performance sports. Therefore, it was analyzed 20 articles published on the Internet, in 4 languages - Portuguese, English, Spanish and French -, 5 for each language, obtained through the search on Google, without limiting the period of time. A cross-cultural qualitative research was conducted with content analysis in a virtual environment was done. The content of the articles was categorized and ranked establishing hierarchical position, resulting then, in 12 categories: Role of Social Networks, Interrelationships, Challenges and Confrontation, Exposure of the Other and Offenses, Language, Pirates-Fakes, Incentive, Image and Brand, Clarification and Denial, Punishment and Responsibility, Restraint and finally Guidance. It was found difference in categorization among languages. The dynamics detected and analyzed showed that there are actually points that lead to vulnerability when athletes participate in Twitter, without any mitigation to be top athletes; on the contrary, being a famous person allows greater intensity of interference and repercussion.
