“Name two women you admire”: expressions of gender violence in response to female gamers’ digital activism

The article investigates the gender-based violence against female gamers based on the case of streamer Bruna Balbino, who suffered retaliation for a video asking interviewees to name two men and two women they admire in the gaming scene. Based on the comments on the video, we seek to answer: how is gender violence expressed in the gaming world in response to women's digital activism? The analysis is based on 916 comments on the video published on the social network X/Twitter, made on October 20th and 21st, 2023. The codebook is constructed based on Stromer-Galley (2002, 2007) and Young (2001) studies on on-line conversations and deliberation, and Sobieraj (2017), Zanello (2020, 2022) and Leite (2022) on gender-based political violence. The results showed that the comments are based on the disqualification or ridicule of women (33.83%), in a joking tone, and on structural male chauvinism (28.57%), evoking derogatory stereotypes about women. Only 4.59% of the comments are violently explicit, demonstrating that violence, as a rule, is subtle.
