Chalking up space for women in artistic gymnastics: the consolidation of uneven bars between the years 1952-1964

Abstract

Permeated by the ideological system of gender, which influenced the roles and values that dictated what women could and could not do in society and in sport, female gymnasts began to compete in Artistic Gymnastics (AG) in the first decades of the 20th century. The aim of this study was to shed light on the consolidation of official apparatus in the competitive format of women’s AG through the analysis of uneven parallel bars, a apparatus initially adapted from the male discipline. It is perceived that, over time, women were subjugated to the medical and social discourse that dictated the use of their bodies at the core of this sport and in society. But through small steps and the development imposed by the athletes themselves, there was a need to build their own apparatus that symbolically reveals that women wanted to direct women’s AG on their own terms.

Mauricio Santos Oliveira, Federal University of Espírito Santo

Licenciado Pleno e Bacharel em Treinamento em Esportes pela Faculdade de Educação Física (FEF) da Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP). Mestrado em Educação Física, na área de concentração Educação Física e Sociedade - Linha de pesquisa Esporte e Sociedade - pela FEF/UNICAMP. Doutor em Ciências pela Escola de Educação Física e Esporte (EEFE) da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) na área de concentração Pedagogia do Movimento Humano. Ademais, possui o título de instrutor em esportes pela Escola de Ginástica de Ollerup (Gymnastikhøjskolen i Ollerup) na Dinamarca. Líder do Núcleo de Pesquisa em Ginástica (NPG), membro da Equipe Universitária de Estudos da Ginástica e do Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Ginástica da USP (GYMNUSP). Docente no Centro de Educação Física e Desportos (CEFD) da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) alocado no Departamento de Desportos. Professor permanente do Programa de Pós-graduação em Educação Física do CEFD/UFES. 

Anna Stella Silva de Souza, Federal University of Espírito Santo

Possui graduação em Educação Física - Bacharelado pela Faculdade Multivix (2018) e graduação em Educação Física pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (2015). Atualmente possui mestrado em andamento na Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. Tem experiência na área de Educação, com ênfase em Educação Física, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: formação inicial e ginástica.

Myrian Nunomura, University of São Paulo

Graduação (Licenciatura) em Educação Física pela Escola de Educação Física e Esporte da Universidade de São Paulo (1989). Mestrado em Educação pela Yokohama National University, Japão (1995). Doutorado em Ciências do Esporte pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2001). Pós-doutoramento no Institute of Health and Sports Sciences da University of Tsukuba, Japão (2006-2008). Livre docência em Educação Física pela Universidade de São Paulo (2009). Atualmente é professora Titular da Escola de Educação Física e Esporte de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo. Desenvolve estudos em Ginástica Artística e Pedagogia do Esporte (formação esportiva, formação profissional e carreira esportiva). Orienta mestrado no programa da EEFERP e FFCLRP-USP e doutorado no programa da FEF-UNICAMP.
