Abstract

The way of life of young people in large cities brings with it dance expressions akin to an urban setting, where the gesture speaks less of an inherited tradition and more than one way of being in the world connected to the aesthetics of a youth culture, propagated by mass culture. In this scenario emerge street dances, originally linked to hip hop movement universe. The aim of this essay is to analyze how this practice reframes to get off the streets, detaching itself from its origin, the parties and exclusive events of hip hop culture to gain spaces dedicated exclusively to break dance and other forms of urban dance. Throughout the discussions, the concepts of Certeau (2008) on the strategic action and everyday gimmicks guided our analysis and proposals for Deleuze and Guattari (2012), from the metaphor of smooth space and striated space.
