The relationships between day-care centers and families arediscussed from a socio-historic perspective. The paper begins with a briefhistory of day-care centers in Brazil, in which some factors that contributedto the transformations observed in these institutions are noted, concerningtheir social function, and how these are reflected in relationships with users. From their condition as philanthropic, authoritarian, and closed to theparticipation of families, day-care centers have increasingly become legallyestablished institutions that are open and democratic. In this context, we finddifferent types of inter-related factors, such as childhood care policies, thesocioeconomic conditions and the scientific knowledge about the developmentand education of young children. We then select three sub-themes to develop:the socio-interactionist presumptions about the development of young children;the social representations about day care, matemity, children and families;and the training of day-care professionals/teachers.
