This is a large-scale study that aims to examine the relationship between the characteristics of 5th-grade teachers and the mathematical achievement of their students. To this end, data on 5th-grade teachers and students from the Sistema Nacional de Avaliação da Educação Básica (Saeb) were used. These data were analyzed using various statistical tests, including chi-square, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's test, and regression models, all conducted using the R software, version 4.0.3. Regarding the results, the analyses indicate that approximately 26% of the variability in students' mathematical achievement can be explained by teachers' characteristics, in addition to revealing significant associations between the two. This percentage highlights the relevance of teachers' profiles in relation to student performance, as well as the need to reflect on initial teacher education. The findings underscore the importance of implementing various public policies to drive improvements, particularly by enhancing teacher training, providing opportunities for continuous professional development, and ensuring ongoing support for both teachers and students.
