Femininity and Disney: the hyperbolic performativity of princesses

Walt Disney Pictures, through the Princess brand, has played a crucial role in the construction of gender, perpetuating for decades a standard of femininity that reinforces restrictive expectations for women, such as dependence on men and an emphasis on physical appearance. However, with the rise of feminism, this conception has evolved. This article analyzes how the company has shaped and continues to shape its female characters, exploring the changes and continuities promoted by the studio through the lens of gender (Butler, 2021), and discussing its sociocultural implications in contemporary society.
