Proposal for a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit about Set Theory

This paper presents the results of the implementation of a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (PMTU) in a Forest Engineering course at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). The PMTU deals with the content of Sets, which is part of the discipline of Calculus I and Analytical Geometry, which is offered to freshmen. This research is a clipping of a larger master's project from the principal researcher. The steps of the didactic sequence proposed by Professor Marco Antonio Moreira, based on the Theory of Meaningful Learning, are detailed and the results obtained in some steps were analyzed. The PMTU presented here was intended to provide learning that generated meanings of content for students, who were able to better assimilate what was worked. The researcher was able to verify evidence of meaningful learning by students, because they were able to externalize and explain, through mathematically accepted concepts, the contents and also apply them to solve proposed problem situations, thus showing that they have captured and understood the concepts developed through of the PMTU.
