The overcoming of the intuitive pedagogical wave by the New School movement, specifically with regard to scientific pedagogy, promoted changes in teacher education. There is a transition from the use of materials designed to develop the child's mental faculties to the use of laboratory experiments, mainly by psychologists, who are responsible for determining what and in what order the teachings should be given. Thus, in view of this transitional context and the writings of Hofstetter & Schneuwly (2017), the theoretical-methodological framework on teacher education, this article has been taken as an object of analysis a manual by Miguel Aguayo, a bestselling author of teacher education in times of scientific pedagogy. Taken as a research document, the text was questioned: what elements of the professional knowledge of the teacher who teaches mathematics are placed in Aguayo (1936)? As a result it is possible to highlight that in this manual, the proposal was that the arithmetic should aim at a practical end, which would be obtained through the serialization of the exercises, made from the psychological tests, which, by the proposal, would remove from the teacher part of their autonomy for professional practice.
