In this paper, we present some reflections, grounded on bibliographical research, about the apprehension/acquisition/ construction of mathematical concepts. We discuss how the process of conceptual apprehension takes place from three theories: the theory of registers of semiotic representation, which is built on studies on semiotics and semiology, the theory of images and conceptual definitions, which is developed on cognitivist assumptions, and the theory of didactical situations, which is based on constructivist studies. We highlight the role of articulating semiotic representations, of the conceptual definitions and of the contextualization of mathematical knowledge according with problem-solving for conceptualization. We conclude by presenting some pedagogical implications, based on the theories discussed, aiming to provide mathematics teachers with theoretical support that helps them to organize didactic situations that really favor the learning of mathematical content with understanding.
