The present work aims to present an activity containing a guiding problem situation that describes the growth rate of the population infected by a viral disease. Its solution involves the exponential function in building a model and approximation of base 10 logarithm values with the slide rule in the solution. This activity is part of the Master dissertation of one of the authors who seeks to return the educators' attention to the use of problem situations and manipulative material as tools that aim to arouse the interest and participation of students in the teaching and learning process. In order to verify the efficiency of such didactic strategies in the teaching of Mathematics, a research was carried out with first year students from Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS). The results obtained suggest that the teaching resources used are captivating and capable of bringing the mathematical world of students closer together.
