We report a basic, exploratory and bibliographic research that investigates two related questions: Why does the teaching of mathematics often present an imbalance between conceptualization and procedures? How to teach mathematics settling this problem? Supported by the theory of the Registres of Semiotic Representations, we look for answers defining the concept of procedural disconnection and proposing the application of computer programming in the teaching of Mathematics. We show that computer programs are a record of semiotic representation and we argue that programming can support the understanding of mathematical concepts by promoting conversion and reducing the need for students to train algorithms to solve problems. To illustrate, we present a model for the application of programming in the teaching of Mathematics and we discuss three examples of activities.
