Traduttori traditori: a tradução em francês de Dos delitos e das penas de Cesare Beccaria

This paper aims at analysing the French translation done by Abby Morellet, in 1766, of the book Dei delitti e delle pene, written by Cesare Beccaria (1738-1794), an Italian Iluminist known as the father of the modern penal right. The translation deeply modified Beccaria’s book. However, due to the success of this translation, the order proposed by Morellet begun to be used as a reference for translation into other languages, among them the Portuguese version. After the 1766 edition by Beccaria himself, Morellet’s translation became a standard work of reference for some Italian editors.
