“In Germany Before the War”, by Randy Newman: a Song Translation Proposal

This article presents a detailed analysis of the interaction
between the formal and semantic levels of a song by Randy Newman,
attempting to pinpoint its expressive mechanisms both as poetic text and
as song. On this basis, we offer a Brazilian Portuguese translation of the
song that tries to achieve the same effects, so that it can be read and sung
on the same terms as the original.
