There is a great variety of reference works classified as school dictionaries today in Brazil. However, this group is not homogeneous at all. This fact may be an obstacle to those who would like to choose the most appropriate dictionary for a certain student. In this scenario, this paper aims at describing 50 school dictionaries and classifying them into main types. In the field of Metalexicography, we used fenomenological, linguistic and functional macroparameters, which proved to be useful for the categorization of the reference works. At the end, we found five main kinds of school dictionaries: children’s, beginner’s, standard, mini and encyclopedic.Downloads
