Abstract
The consolidation of Western industrial society brought about profound changes in the usual ways of life for a large part of the population. The ongoing transformations have led to new understandings related to the health-disease process, based on the inclusion of social factors related to illness. In this process, mental disorders are recognized as illnesses, including depression. In medical students, studies point to high depressive disorders when compared to the levels of symptoms in the general population, highlighting the need to elucidate the triggering factors of depressive conditions during graduation. In this perspective, this study seeks to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with depressive symptoms in medical students at the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), located in northern Brazil. This is a research with a quantitative approach, carried out using two instruments applied to medical students enrolled between the first and fourth year of the medical course at UFAC: the Beck Depression Inventory and a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package and transformed into frequencies and percentages shown in tables and graphs. The study found a prevalence of 36.15% of depressive symptoms in the studied population. The academics pointed out the demands, the decrease in sleep hours and the course load as the main factors for the manifestation of depressive conditions. The prevalence of depressive symptoms found indicates the need for actions aimed at recognizing this problem and preventing the development of morbidities and the risk of suicide.
