Objective: To analyze how the leading journals, considering the CAPES Interdisciplinary Area, address the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in their article preparation and review guidelines.
Method: This is a descriptive and quantitative study that analyzes the web portals of the selected journals based on the number of published papers and the number of postgraduate programs involved between 2017 and 2022. The data used to select the journals were obtained from the open data of the Sucupira platform, and the results were generated from the information made available by the journals.
Result: The data reveals a significant correlation between the mention of the use of AI and the impact of journals. Only 20.5% of the analyzed journals mention generative AI in the guidelines for preparing papers, with only 7.5% doing so in the review process of submitted papers, and a mere 6% in both processes. This correlation was observed considering the Qualis, CiteScore, JIF, and H5 metrics, as well as the cost of publication.
Conclusions: The financial implications of AI usage in prestigious journals are significant. A direct relationship was observed between the mention of the use of AI and the impact and cost of journals. Journals with more rigorous guidelines on the use of AI tend to present higher values in these metrics and higher costs, suggesting that the most prestigious journals adopt more restrictive stances regarding the use of these technologies.
