The birth of modern schooling: a comparison of two studies
DOI:
https://doi.org/10.5007/%25xAbstract
This essay compares two historic sociological studies of
contemporary schooling. The books choosen are “Production of
school/production of society: socio-historical analysis of some
crucial moments of the school evolution in the West”, by Andre
Petitat, and “Archeology of the School”, by Julia Varela and
Fernando Alvarez-Úria. Both studies identify a break between
Medeival educational practices and modern schools, emphasize the productive function of the educational institution and its class
character, but present a different interpretation of educational
methods and gender inequality.
