Abstract

This paper proposes a systematization of the debates concerning human body within the scope of Physical Education; it aims, furthermore, to introduce Physical Education students into this debate examining certain sources, some of which are already classical in the literature available in Spanish. In the
first part of the text the term body is seen throughout history; it is observed how it is consecutively associated to organism and to the material conditions that shapes its awareness
and the socially constituted representation. In the second part it presents the distinction between body and organism as well as the difference between animal and human organism.
It also mentions the condition of the body’s subjection under certain social representation. The third part recovers the fundamental thesis of those authors of the 60’s – after the
Frankfurt School – who recognize body practices as alienated practices; in this context, the concept of ambiguity is identified as one of the keys to understand the present body culture. Lastly, the paper points out the discipline committed to control
practices and formulate questions about the themes proposed.
