Abstract

This article presents John Dewey´s political philosophy as displayed in his essays Liberalism and Social Action and Freedom and Culture, published in 1935 and 1939 respectively, having in mind to understand Deweyan´s educational conceptions presented in an earlier book, Democracy and Education, of 1916. Dewey criticizes his times liberalism – the laissez-faire – through the analyses of the liberal concepts of individualism and freedom. He also presents the ideas that from his stand point are the valid ones to support democracy. Dewey´s political propositions, developed right in the turmoil of the crisis of American society, when New Deal was put into practice, ground the principles of his pedagogy which stand against promoting students spontaneity as the final and exclusive aim of school education.
