Abstract

We discuss the pre-requisite of phonological awareness to learn alphabetic systems and the tests to measuring it. In the speech chain, neither the segments nor words are separated in a discrete way. In theprinted system, letters are discrete unitsand words are separated by blanks.Children facing the task of decoding letters have to destroy their intuitive perception of that chain. There are threemain approaches on the subject: for the first, phonological awareness is a pre-requisite for reading; for second it develops with reading and for the third, there is a reciprocal and cumulative influence.
