A review asked by the Secretary of Basic Education belonging
to the Ministry of Education and Sports (SEF/MEC) about the General National Curriculum Parameters and those specific to Portuguese language, directed to the 5th up to 8th grades is presented, emphasizing some aspects relative to comprehension processes, particularly those involved in reading. Some improvements of the general document are signaled in the field of computing science and cross cultural topics. The criteria employed to obtain data about illiteracy stilllacks better clarification.The document relative to the Portuguese language lacks a more solid
psycholinguistic background, which impairs the proposed curriculum for teaching reading.
