This article aims to describe and analyze the public spaces of reading and the ways of reading of university students beginning in the undergraduate degrees of Language Studies and Pedagogy of Brazilian universities. This is a qualitative and quantitative study, the result of research developed at the University of Passo Fundo, from 2015 to 2019, which, on the other hand, is a development of an Interinstitutional Academic Cooperation Project - Procad whose member universities were: Sao Paulo State University - UNESP, Assis, Marília and Presidente Prudente campus, Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) and University of Passo Fundo (UPF). The data obtained showed that reading is practiced in the most diverse public spaces and the representation of the reader performing executing reading practices, legitimated by the Old Regime, still remains in the society. The ways of reading that allow certain freedom regarding texts in public places are also performed by scholars of Language Studies and Pedagogy, but to a smaller proportion than classical positions. The results, therefore, suggest the university professors’ higher courses of Language Studies and Pedagogy of this project, as well as the other universities interested in the subject, know the reading practices of the respondents of the research and suggest that the professors of these undergraduate students rethink the methodological actions that involve reading activities
