We report the considerations of an experience done with Mathematical Modeling on mathematics education with students from basic education under the context of the theme tax collection. The main issue is: What conclusion do we reach in relation to the forwarding classes using mathematical modeling as the teaching and learning methodology for basic education? This article aims to describe an exercise done in class with mathematical modeling and set out relations with approaches in the process of teaching and learning through procedures adopted by both teachers and students involved in the activity. The analyses show the approach of mathematical modeling in the concepted adopted with a humanist and cognitivist definition. We can see that, Mathematical Modeling, in the context of the classroom in the basic education, it changes, the routine practice of dealing the teaching and learning, knowing that it is still focused on shape of a teacher as the owner of knowledge.
