This study aims to identify and analyze the main teaching challenges present in the skills of the areas of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), considering the initial teacher training. It is a theoretical study with a documentary perspective, as it is based on the analysis of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) of High School. The present study arose from the reflections made in the discipline of Teacher Education, in the Doctorate course of the Institute of Mathematical and Scientific Education (IEMCI) of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), it intends to contribute to the area of research of initial formation and continuing education of teachers looking at a document about which little has been studied yet, the BNCC of High School, a document that is today the main curriculum guidance for this level of education. Based on the proposal for the development of skills and abilities, BNCC brought with it great challenges for the initial training of Science and Mathematics teachers. To identify and discuss the main challenges in each of these areas of knowledge, 23 skills related to Natural Sciences were analyzed, distributed in three competences, and 45 skills in the area of Mathematics, distributed in five competences. From the analysis of the skills of Natural Sciences, we highlight three fundamental points that we consider great challenges for the formation of teachers in this area: contextualization, interdisciplinarity and the ability to intervene directly in reality, in social order problems, through the proposition of solutions. In turn, from the analysis of skills in the area of Mathematics, we show the ability to interpret and build an integrated view of mathematics applied to reality, in different contexts, taking into account the technological advances that are required in the job market. From the analyzes carried out, it was possible to identify the main challenges brought by BNCC for teacher training.
