This article is based on a paper presented at PME 8 in Sydney (1984) and lectures given at the Free University of Berlin (1984) and at the University of Georgia, Athens, USA (1985). The author discusses the Philosophical and Epistemological Aspects of Mathematics and their interaction with the theory and practice in Mathematics Education.
