In this paper we investigated whether activities with problem solving involving arithmetic favor students in the final years of elementary school to experience self-analysis of their own learning processes (metacognition). Students from a public school in Sergipe participated in the study. Besides the problem-solving activities, the students answered a metacognitive questionnaire and participated in an interview. Through the collected answers, we intended to know the metacognitive strategies employed by the students when performing the activities. The problems were planned following the levels of knowledge expected from the students as proposed by Robert (technical, mobilizable, and available). The students' answers to the problems, questionnaire and interview showed that these activities did motivate metacognitive processes.
