Abstract

This work is a translation of the chapter “Descriptions – the intellectual background” serving as a complement to the chapter 5 of the book titled Exploring Translations Studies (2010) by Anthony Pym. The chapter outlines the relationship between Russian Formalism and some of the strands of the Translation Studies which emerged during the 19th century. It brings to the fore works done in Prague (Prague Circle), Bratislava, Leipzig, Holland and Flanders focusing specially on the Tel-Aviv School of Itamar-Even and Gideon Toury, the main forerunners of the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). By analyzing this academic context, not only it describes the type of approaches those theorists suggested, but it also discusses the ups and downs of such paradigms problematizing concepts like “translation shifts”, “assumed translations” and “norms”. This translation aims at presenting and sharing Pym’s work as clearly and fluid as the original is, so that it serves as both a historical reference and an introductory text to Translation Studies.

Anthony Pym, Universitat Rovira i Virgili

Anthony Pym is Distinguished Professor of Translation and Intercultural Studies and coordinator of the Intercultural Studies Group at the Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain. He is also President of the European Society for Translation Studies and Professor Extraordinary at Stellenbosch University.

Membro do Nucleo de Pesquisa Historia da Tradução (CNPq/UFSC). Revisor na Revista Cadernos de Tradução do Programa de Pos-graduação em Estudos da Tradução (UFSC). Especialização em Desenvolvimento Sustentavel e Gestão Ambiental pelo Centre de Recherches et dAction pour la Paix (CERAP). Tem experiência em ensino de inglês (Centro Cultural americano - American Corner CIRES). Também tem experiência em tradução/interpretação de conferências nas línguas francesa, inglesa e portuguesa.

Bernardo Sant'Anna, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina
