The relationship between translation and the teaching of foreign languages, although historically founded, has been shadowed more recently by the adoption of communicative methods in the teaching of modern languages. Against this excluding tendency, this paper defends the hypothesis that the practice of translation, carried out within language and literature courses at University, represents a space, where theory and practice, in their variety of forms, interact, stimulate autonomous research and contribute to the development of critical thinking. The discussion of such a topic is illustrated in this paper by examples taken from the work with students of a Diploma Course in Translation (German) at the University of São Paulo.Downloads
