The practice of translating Latin poets into Portuguese prose is usually held by the absence of a metrical system that corresponds to the prosodical impositions of the Latin verse line. This paper discusses in what aspects the Latin and the Portuguese versification norms conflate and move away from one another, and proposes a model for a poetic translation of the elegiac distich through the exemplification of Propertius, El., I, 14.Downloads
