The prior knowledge the mathematic students elementary school: what is mathematics? What is its origin? How would a world without mathematics?

In this article, we presente the results about an investigation about an investigation with qualitative and quantitative approach, conducted with 22 students of the sixth grade of elementary school in a public school of Tijucas, Santa Catarina, about the mathematical topic. For data collection, written records and drawings produced by students were used. Subsequently the content analysis was used to interpret the data collected, which were tables and graphs. The results generally show that students assign the concept of mathematical formulas and utilitarian way, its origin dates back in the early age and a world without mathematics would be a chaos.
