Abstract

If it is important to become aware of howthe teaching of mother language cancontribute to the student's psycho-so-cial and cultural development, we have to make explicit the language's categorical characteristics. It is uncontroversial nowadays that the human being have a special cognitive capacity, the 'faculty of language', which allows him/her to acquire his/herown language in contact with the linguistic context and without taking conscience of that. Each language isconstituted by a lexicon and a system of rules and operations, its computational system. The acquisition and the domain of a language suppose, thus, many complex mental operations.
Regarding the formal teaching of mother language we have to recognise that the progressive development of nuclear competences have clear consequences in the development of mental capacities: attention, generalization and systematization, practice of memoryand theoretical reasoning, creativity, deepen of the sensibility and socio-cultural integration.
