This work recommends that instead of prescriptive rules, the focus ofthe teaching of demonstrative pronouns should be the functionality of their various uses. We willdiscuss that, regardless the deictic field, inwhich the showing is established, theopposition in Portuguese is generally binary, not ternary, deviating from what isfound in descriptive schemes in thetraditional grammar. In parallel, we willargue that the selection is determined of different, concurrent motivations, which also contributes to apparent fluctuation inthe rules of use.
