Abstract

This paper was prepared with the goal of presenting a broadperspective about Preschool Education in the national context. It hasthree parts: the first presents the context in which preschool education isfound, based on the legal environment established by the Constitution of1988 and the LDB of 1996 and of the concepts concerning what day-care and preschools should assume as educational institutions in thecurrent national context. The second identifies the challenges that, frommy point of view, are facing educators in the field. Finally the paperpresents the advances and setbacks concerning the production andadvancement of policy proposals for preschool education in Brazil.
