The article presents a PhD study conducted at the Federal University at Santa Catarina, concluded in early 2017, which reflected on picture books from among the works selected by the National School Library Program (PNBE) for Early Childhood Education, in its four editions (2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014). The study reflects on the quantitative and qualitative representativeness of this work. It analyzes the collections according to their themes, characters and composition of narratives, perceiving picture books as a foundation of the literary experience of reading, which are dedicated to developing the sensibility of observation. Specifically, considering the role of teachers as mediators of reading, the study can help teachers expand their practice with picture books that reach their schools.
