This study analyzes how the “modernizing” educational policies restructured education in Mexico, reconfiguring the working conditions of elementary school teachers and how they conduct
their jobs. The restructuring underway has continued in agendas set by international agencies such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and others, under new policies of differential pay for the work of teaching. The paper analyzes the strategies elementary school teachers in Mexico City have
used to confront what they experience as negative consequences of education reform for their work and public education.
