Abstract

Theorical and practical tests on science teaching had been applied to students at light level of public schools in the State of Santa Catarina. The tests were based on the Hierarchy of scientific knowledge such as: to use scientific symbols and instruments of measure; to make observations; to interpret and apply scientific concepts, to plan and carry out experimental work. The results have showed a very low level of performance, particularly on practical tests and the ability to solve problems. These results have confirmed the hypothesis that the teaching in this area of knowledge were very poor at to elaborate, to interpret, to infer and to apply knowledge in new situations, that is, the teaching were dogmatic and memoristic.

Graduação em Química pela Furb (1972) , mestrado em Química pela UFSC (1977) , doutorado em Química pela University of East Anglia (1983) , pós-doutorado pela University of East Anglia (1984) e pós-doutorado pela Rohempton Institute (1993) . Atualmente é professor da UNISUL
