This work aimed to investigate evidence of algebraic thinking related to first-degree equations, mobilized by seventh-year students in the Final Years of Elementary School based on practices based on Exploratory Mathematics Teaching (EEM in Portuguese acronym). Fundamental dimensions of EEM are inquiry, reflection, communication and collaboration. Analyses are supported by transcription of audio recordings during classes, the students’ written records and the teacher/researcher’s field notebook. The practice based on EEM helped students negotiate meanings, both for the idea of the unknown and for representation of situations involved in the tasks using first-degree equations. When solving equations, students used different strategies with an understanding of the processes involved. The equal sign was used to give different meanings during the tasks, including correct and incorrect ways.
