Um estranho país de pesadelos: a tradução de “The ascent of Mount Roraima” (1885), de Everard im Thurn

O presente artigo busca contextualizar o texto “The ascent of Mount Roraima” (1885), de Everard Ferdinand im Thurn (1852-1932), uma narrativa exploratória central em seu tempo pela influência que exerceu como documento de um ápice do projeto imperialista britânico na Amazônia. Adicionalmente, oferece breves comentários sobre a tradução que o acompanha, que é a primeira publicada em português brasileiro. O trabalho focaliza o impacto do relato do autor, explorador, botânico e administrador inglês no mundo científico e literário do final do século XIX e início do XX. Ao descrever a riqueza botânica nos entornos da montanha e o estranhamento causado por sua topografia, que sugeria o isolamento quase absoluto de seu topo, influenciou a ciência eurocêntrica e a produção literária de autores como Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), que escreveu O Mundo Perdido ([1912] 2018).
