Abstract

The article focuses on the role and place that basic education teachers play and can play in teaching continued education. The article elects as an empirical reference continued education groups organized in a municipal educational system, in which teachers of basic education play a role as teacher-educators of their peers. The research used document analysis and semi-structured interviews with individuals involved with the continued education groups. The analysis highlighted representations related to the figure of the teacher-educators concerning the characterization of their work with the teachers and their role in their education. The study revealed the existence of a well-defined place for these teacher-educators, that is in keeping with the professionalization of teaching. However, the data also point to certain weaknesses that influence the performance of these teacher-educators, making it difficult for them to occupy a more central place in teacher education in that municipality.
