The present text refers to the study of a structured teaching sequence in the form of a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (PMTU) for the Statistics approach in Elementary Education, assessing its relevance in didactic terms and favoring the construction of statistical concepts. This didactic sequence proposed by Moreira (2011) is supported, among other theoretical perspectives, the Meaningful Learning Theory of David Paul Ausubel. The PMTU was structured in 40 periods and involved some trends in Mathematics Education such as games, researches, movies, among others. The research, qualitative and participant, take as instruments for data collection the records in the researcher's logbook. Besides, the study uses the students' productions during the meetings as an analysis tool, especially the diagnostic and summative evaluation. The results point to the viability of the proposal and demonstrate the importance of bringing the contents taught at school closer to the students' context, taking into account their previous knowledge.
